One of the most sought after fishing lures is the ones made out of wood. They are durable and can be repainted when they start to show signs of excessive use. Some of the higher quality lures can be quite pricey so many fisherman (or fisherwoman) would like to know how to make wooden freshwater fishing lures.
These quick and easily made lures can be used in either freshwater or saltwater, although it tends to work better in the first mentioned. Follow these steps to create a wooden lure with a personal touch.
1. Cut open and flatten an aluminum can. With thick gloves, cut the can into a square sheet of aluminum.
2. With metal shears, cut the sheet into a spoon shaped piece. Cut several in various sizes if different sizes of lures are going to be made. They can be anywhere from one to four inches, narrowing to one end. The outcome should look like a small prey fish.
3. The next step is to cut a slit in the head of a clothes pin, about a half inch deep. Add some strong adhesive into the cut and insert the aluminum fish into the slit.
4. Cut a hole on the underside of the clothes pin and use the same glue to attach a hook. This hook can be any size, as long as it’s comfortable to the lure craftsman.
5. Cut the legs off of the peg style clothes pin. After drilling a hole from one side of the front of the lure, add beads with a straight pin to create eyes on the fish.
6. Next step is to paint the lure. Bright colors such as orange and red seem to attract more fish that the duller colors.
It is very handy to be able to make freshwater wooden fishing lures. These can catch many fish without paying for the name brand lures that are sold nationwide. They can also be customized with feathers and spinning objects to attract even bigger fish.
